Business owners expressed concern at an announcement late today by the Costa Rican Transportation and Public Works Ministry (MOPT) that the main artery connecting San José with points westward including the main international airport in Alajuela would be closed for six weeks starting Saturday, January 21, 2017 in the direction of Alajuela-San José.

The bridge, known as “La Platina” by local frustrated residents who have suffered years of delays and closures for repairs, is undergoing a complete overhaul, said transportation officials. It spans the Virilla River.

The Costa Rican Chamber of Private Businesses (Uccaep) said they were worried about the potential economic impact of the two-lane closure not only for businesses, but for commuters, and called for detailed contingency plans that include work-from-home options and alternative transportation solutions.

The Ministry has urged commuters to use train service connecting westward points in Belén and Heredia with San José, and an increased schedule has been provided during some closures. The MOPT press office said they would be releasing a detailed emergency plan for the closure on Friday, and that in the meantime they are holding meetings with leaders in a number of sectors to discuss measures to mitigate the impact of this important infrastructure project and its ensuing disruptions to daily life.
