As recently reported by The Costa Rica Star, the Gold Coast of Guanacaste is now home to an international hacker retreat and a programming boot camp. Hackathons, collaborative events that last from a few hours to a few days for the purposes of nurturing special IT projects and creativity, are becoming more common in Costa Rica, and thus we are pleased to bring you this press release by Gorilla Logic, an IT firm based in Boulder that recently sponsored a hackathon in Escazu:

Transportation Application: a Major Theme

This year’s hackathon themes were transportation, government transparency and poverty reduction. Transportation was the most popular theme with many of the teams producing solutions for public transportation users. Previously, DAL has focused on themes and challenges centered on public safety, health, agriculture, educational innovation, and citizen participation.

Government Transparency Solution Wins

With thirteen participating teams of four to five individuals, the competition was thrilling and intense. At the event’s conclusion, the winning team, Hacktivistas, was recognized for their government transparency solution that modeled effective use of open data—allowing citizens to make those who execute municipal budgets accountable and allowing both parties to interact with one another.
