The British Ambassador organized a special send off for eight Costa Rican scholars, announced the British Embassy.

Chevening is the UK government’s global leadership program, offering fully-funded scholarships for future leaders and influencers to study in the UK.

On August 21, 2017, British Ambassador to Costa Rica, Ross Denny, hosted a farewell event for the eight Costa Rican scholars who will be heading off to study in the United Kingdom during the academic year 2017-2018 under the Chevening scholarship program.

This activity provided a valuable opportunity for Ambassador Denny to meet each of the scholars individually and to learn more about their aspirations for the upcoming year in the UK.

It also allowed the outgoing students to interact with past Chevening scholars, Andrés Madriz and María Gabriela Alvarado, and to learn about the Chevening Alumni network in the country.

This year’s Chevening awardees, their discipline and academic destination in the UK are as follows:

1. Diego Arguedas Ortiz, MA in Climate Change: History, Culture and Society (King’s College London)
2. Claudio Castro Badilla, MSc in Agriculture and Development (University of Reading)
3. María Lucía Contreras Ramírez, MSc in Economics (University of Sussex)
4. Monica Espinoza Rojas, LLM in Law (University College London)
5. Ana Cristina Gutierrez, MSc in Human Resources and Organizations (London School of Economics and Political Science)
6. María José Rojas Segura, LLM in International Economic Law (Queen Mary University of London)
7. Natalia Solano Valverde, MSc in Ecological Economics (University of Edinburgh), and
8. Yansy Vargas Solís, MSc in International Development: Politics, Governance and Development Policy (University of Manchester)

Chevening is currently accepting applications for the 2018-2019 academic year. Applications must be received before the November 7, 2017 deadline and must be submitted through Chevening’s official website.

Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders since 1983, according to the scholarship website.

Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of award – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world.
