Timothy Stubbs is an American man from Grand Junction, Colorado who fled to Costa Rica in December of 2015 two weeks before receiving final sentence for tax evasion and failing to file personal and corporate tax returns.

According to the evidence that was presented during the case, Stubbs was the owner of National Rebate Fund Inc., an investment fund in Grand Junction which earned over US$7 million between the years 2005 and 2007 for which he failed to file corporate income tax returns; in those same years he posted US$2 million in personal profit for which he didn’t pay taxes either; in fact the man hadn’t filed a personal tax return since 1995 and had not paid individual taxes since 1993.

Stubbs had also been prosecuted for defrauding hundreds of clients out of large sums of money.

A release by the Department of Justice states that in order to conceal his income Stubbs paid more than US$700,000.00 in personal expenses from the business bank accounts, purchased real estate in Colorado and Hawaii for a total cost of over US$2.9 million, and acquired more than US$370,000.00 in gold and silver in 2007.

Two weeks prior to his sentencing hearing Stubbs removed his electronic bracelet and headed back to Costa Rica where he had been living in 2014 prior to his arrest and where apparently he had residency.

The investigation shows that Stubbs lied to immigration officials in Costa Rica to renew his residency and stay permanently.

Timothy Stubbs was arrested in Nuevo Arenal, Guanacaste in 2017 by Costa Rican authorities and deported to the United States.

“In addition to the term of prison imposed (7 years of jail), U.S. District Court Judge Christine M. Arguello ordered Stubbs to serve three years of supervised release and to pay $639,114 in restitution to the IRS and a fine of $50,000.00”, states the release by the Department of Justice.
