The activity at the Poas volcano was captured on video this past May 25th, as members of the National Seismology Network were doing maintenance work in the area.

The impressive footage shows the degasification with an important column of water vapor.

“The degasification is persistent but passive, it consists in low temperature fumaroles rich in water vapor with a relatively low content of magmatic gases such as CO2, SO2, and H2S”, explains the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (Ovsicori)

The seismic activity is low.

Today the government announced the beginning of the construction phase of the five security shelters at the Poas Volcano National Park; these shelters are one of the requirements for the reopening of the park to the public.

Poas Volcano has been closed since April 2017 when the eruptions began; this situation has left many families who depended financially on the tourism activity in the area in a very difficult situation, while also causing great losses to the National System of Areas and Conservation.

President Carlos Alvarado has taken on the commitment of finding a solution to these problems, “The safe reopening of the Poas Volcano National Park” will allow the reactivation of the tourism and economic activity in this region”, commented Alvarado.

Members of the government met with representatives of the Commission Pro-Reopening of the Poas Volcano last week.

“We feel very positive because we saw the concern of the authorities and the concrete actions they are taking to give a real response to the difficult situation we are facing. As a commission we were able to express our concerns to the financial necessities that the families and businesses affected by the closure of the national park have. We will work hand in hand with the Costa Rica Tourism Board (ICT) and work on generating new tourist options to attract visitors”, commented Luis Angel Salazar Arrieta, representative of the commission.
