Through a police operation organized this Tuesday morning by the Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ), 29 people were detained as suspects of being part of a criminal gang dedicated to car thefts.

A total of 27 raids took place in Barrio San Jose, Alajuela; Concasa in San Rafael, Alajuela; Heredia, San Jose in Purral, Goicoechea and La Carpio in La Uruca.

Members of this gang are linked mainly to the theft of vehicles, motorcycles and delivery trucks, however, the operation also had the objective of locating suspects of other crimes, some linked to the theft of cargo containers and another for attempted murder.

The main suspect was arrested in the area known as “El Infiernillo” in Alajuela, but three suspects of the same criminal organization were not found and the police is still searching for them.

According to OIJ, the gang would threaten car owners with firearms to steal their vehicle, while in other cases they took advantage of the carelessness of owners.
