The work by the Border Police (Ministry of Public Security) to battle the illegal extraction of gold in the north zone of the country continues delivering good results. On this occasion, officers managed to seize 1,900 kilograms of cyanide, material used for the extraction of gold.

The material was divided in 38 large bags. Officers that were patrolling the area received information about the presence of the material in a house in the area of Peñas Blancas de la Cruz in Guanacaste. As they arrived they confirmed the existence of the bags and immediately coordinated with the Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ) and the Fire Department for the revision of the material and the corresponding testing.

Officers arrested a man of last name Mendoza of Costa Rican nationality.

“This material represents a high danger to public health and is extremely harmful to the environment. Confiscating it prevents it from being used in the extraction of gold, illicit activity that authorities have been battling through different police operations”, explained the director of Border Control Police, Allan Obando.
