Costa Rican Drug Control Police (PCD) managed to detect a shipment of drugs consisting of 240 kilograms of cocaine which were inside a container transporting honey in barrels.

The container was located in the port of Moín, Limón; police officers inspected a ship aboard which they found the container where they found seven suspicious backpacks inside of which they found 240 packets with an approximate weight of 1 kilogram each.

The container had as destination, Belgium, Europe.

On another operation with international cooperation, five Costa Rican men and three Ecuadorian men were arrested as suspects of drug trafficking.

The men were apprehended in waters of the Costa Rican Pacific Coast, near Flamingo, Guanacaste, aboard a fishing boat of name, national authorities had the assistance of the DEA and the USA Coast Guard Service.

Aboard the vessel the PCD found a total 531 packages, each of close to 1 kilogram of cocaine.

Just last week authorities also reported the confiscation of 640 kilograms of cocaine in Golfito, Puntarenas.

The Ministry of Security, Michael Soto, commented during a press conference that “we are living the highest overproduction of cocaine in the region”; according to Soto, the overproduction of this drug comes from Colombia, Peru and Bolivia.

This overproduction causes the price of this drug to be in its lowest levels.

Recently Panama confiscated 3.6 tons of cocaine in one single operation, which is highly unlikely.

Costa Rica has seized close to 15 tons of cocaine so far this year.

“We are doing big efforts in fighting drug trafficking, specially coordinating with different international police and military bodies in operations by sea, land and air”, concluded Soto.
