On the weekend of September 20th, photos of the Spanish couple Pedro and Silvia Sierra went viral. They depicted the couple in Costa Rica, Pedro in camouflage jungle gear, and Silvia in a bra and pants. They appeared to be deep in the jungle in the photos, and seemed to be hunting domestic cats. There were photos of cats impaled on trees, being eaten by snakes, hanging upside down from Pedro’s hand, and lined up on the ground – all apparently dead. Once again in Costa Rica — you could not make this stuff up.
Pedro Sierra has a Facebook page with photos of himself in all manner of Indiana Jones outfits, while Silvia seems to prefer lacey lingerie for her jungle photos. On the page, Pedro explains that the couple is hanging out in Costa Rica to avoid the “covidiots” in Spain who insist on the wearing of facemasks due to the pandemic. He has a nice portrait of himself holding a giant machete onto which is impaled a blue surgical facemask. Pedro states that the purpose of their visit to Costa Rica is “to exterminate all cats; cats are a plague.” He probably did not state that on his Immigration form.
The punishment for killing cats (and other domestic animals) in Costa Rica is two years of prison time. Several people became alarmed at the FB photos, and a denuncia (criminal report) was filed to the OIJ by the Federacion Canina de Costa Rica. A petition to have the couple expelled from the country was posted on change.org, and was quickly filled with 25,000 signatures. Sierra claims to be a professional photographer and has posted many photos of the couple in Costa Rica, although the photos do not always match the stated location, nor a recent time stamp when photo was taken. The photos show them perfectly combed and with good make-up. They are a wiley pair.
Sierra calls himself the “last free man”, and boasts, “I like Chuck Norris, Stallone, Arnold, Van Damme, Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood, and other action figures.” There seem to be no known photos of any of those action figures hunting and killing house cats. Sierra says, “If you’re not capable of living the adventure of life without caring about what others think of you, you are NOT alive. YOU ARE DEAD IN LIFE.” His photos show him eating iguana, armadillo, turtle, and other meats on Costa Rica’s protected animals lists.
Many of the photos allegedly were taken at Refugio Mixto de Vida Silvestre Romelia, although the nature preserve vehemently denies permission was ever given to the couple to enter, camp, videotape, or much less hunt in the reserve. Some people who signed the petition to have the couple expelled claimed they recognized some of the photos of the couple’s food choices from a Mexican culinary magazine.
The couple has now gone quiet on FB, and are no longer giving clues as to their whereabouts. Costa Rican authorities and national park rangers are on the lookout for the pair. It is believed that they are still in the country at this time. Sierra posted, “Where are all those Ticoanimalistas – vegetarian terrorists who are collecting signatures on change.org to throw us out of Costa Rica? We are waiting for you…” He adds, “Keep your cats indoors.
