The BBC confirmed today that a German tourist died yesterday while purportedly posing for a photo of himself leaping off a cliff as he toured the 15th-century Peruvian Incan citadel of Machu Picchu.

Oliver Park, 51, said the BBC, “ignored safety signs and warnings from wardens and went into a restricted area close to the edge of a cliff on Wednesday, according to local officials.”

The body was recovered from a ravine by rescuers and taken to the morgue in the nearby Andean highland city of Cusco.

With over one million visitors to the site each year, there are bound to be a few mishaps.

Also this year, in March, British daily The Independent reported on two European tourists who were arrested after stripping naked for a photo at Machu Picchu.

Britain’s Adam Burton, 23, was spotted by guards, along with a Frenchman, 28-year-old Eric Xavier Mariec, “after the pair removed their clothes to take nude photos with a mobile phone, police told the Andina news agency. The two men were reportedly taken to a police station and then to court where they were charged with ‘moral misconduct’,” the news outlet reported.

It makes you wonder about the effect of being 8,000 feet above sea level.
