Officials from the Ministry of Public Security (Spanish initials: MSP) in Costa Rica are coordinating an ocean rescue in Uvita, located the Osa Peninsula. According to a news report filed by Joselyne Ugarte of online news daily Costa Rica Hoy, the rescue involves two people who were aboard a small rotary wing aircraft, which apparently crashed at sea about a nautical mile from the beach.

The Director from the Air Surveillance Service of Costa Rica, a special unit of the MSP, mentioned that he thinks the occupants of the gryrocopter, a light aircraft also known as an autogyro, did not suffer any injuries as they crashed in the Pacific Ocean.

Carlos Hidalgo, spokesperson for the MSP, explained that one of the occupants is believed to be a man from the United States; it is not confirmed whether he is a tourist or a resident of the Southern Pacific region of Costa Rica, where many expats choose to settle. Details about the woman aboard the aircraft were not immediately released.

As of 11:30 am local time, personnel from the Quepos Station of the National Coast Guard Service of Costa Rica were en route to rescue the couple, whom are believed to be wearing flotation devices. The Coast Guard crew was expected to reach them in about 30 minutes under the current oceanic conditions.

Gyrocopters and other light aircraft are not uncommon sights around Manuel Antonio and the Pacific coastal region of Costa Rica. They are ideal for sightseeing, and a few tourism providers offer scenic airborne tours aboard this type of aircraft, which is known to be relatively safe.
