Prayag United publicized yesterday their signing of Carlos Hernandez, a world class midfielder from Costa Rica.
The Kolkata soccer club finished 7th last season, but have been spending some cash to make sure that they are challengers for a league title and a cup spot. Club Manager Sanjoy Sen, has already acquired the power-houses: Ranti Matins, Gouramangi Moirangthem and Subrata Paul. The addition of Hernandez, Costa Rica’s former world cup player, along with the others, beefs up San’s squad with a formidable line-up.
“I am really happy to be associated with Prayag United Sports Club. I am looking forward to this new opportunity and challenges. It has indeed been a big decision to move to India, but I feel that there is this huge zest and enthusiasm for football here. I am excited to be part of this excellent team, and hope to contribute to the success of the team in the coming season,” said Carlos Hernandez.
Hernandez has played for his country at the international level since his youth. He represented Costa Rica in the 2001 Men’s U-20 World Youth Championships in Argentina, the 2004 Summer Olympics, and played for the Costa Rican National Team in the 2006 World Cup as well.
The Mid-fielder goes to India by way of Australia, where he was one of last term’s top scorers for the Melbourne Victory. Hernandez scored a total of 36 goals in the Australian A-league over 5 seasons. He also won the Jonny Warren Award in 2009/10 for the best player in the Australian A-league.
Hernandez was released by the Victory after the two parties failed to agree on new signing terms. Carlos Hernandez alleges that the club was asking him to take a pay cut. The team denies the allegation, stating that they offered him a contract of more than $250,000 per season. No matter, Hernandez is now off to new footballing experiences in India.
