The Ministry of Public Education announced a nationwide cancellation of classes this afternoon as a preventive safety measure due to the expected arrival of tropical storm Otto this evening or early tomorrow in Costa Rica, announced Education Minister Sonia Marta Mora Escalante on the institution’s official Facebook page.

Classes are suspended for Thursday and Friday (Nov. 24 and 25) in all educational institutions in the country order to “safeguard the physical and mental integrity of minors, teachers and administrative staff of educational institutions,” read the directive.

The decision was made in coordination with the emergency operations center and the national emergency commission (CNE) which have put the northern Caribbean coast under red alert, and the rest of the country under yellow alert due to the threats of flooding and high winds with the arrival of Otto.
