After less than one year of directing the Costa Rica national soccer team “La Sele”, head coach Gustavo Matosas announced his decision to leave the team.

The announcement was made this Wednesday, September 4th and he will direct the team until September 10, directing Costa Rica in its friendly match against its equivalent of Uruguay scheduled for this Friday, September 6.

Matosas, a native or Uruguay clarified during a press conference that he is not leaving for “financial reasons” but because “it is hard” not to be able to work with the players every day. “I didn’t think it would be this hard. It is not my thing; I am a head coach for a sports club” commented Matosas.

The Uruguayan only directed the national soccer team in 8 matches. There are rumors that he received an offer from a Mexican team. “I live day to day… I didn’t know that being the head coach of a national team was so boring”, stated Matosas, who is a formal professional soccer player, and has directed 14 soccer teams, among them Mexican soccer club America and the Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal FC.

Rodolfo Villalobos, president of the Costa Rican Soccer Federation (FEDEFUTBOL), described the situation as very “surprising” and explained that the Executive Committee of the federation will be meeting to work on the method to choose the next head coach.

Costa Rica will face Uruguay this Friday at 8 p.m. at the National Stadium.
