Costa Ricans rank in the fourth position when it comes to English proficiency in Latin America with a score of 51.35 according to Education First.

This index ranks the level of English in different scales from “Very High”, “High”, “Average”, “Low and “Very Low” and provides information with regards to the direct relation between English proficiency and a variety of economic and social indicators.

Costa Rica earned position 38 among 72 participating countries, and in fourth place among the 14 Latin American nations.

The first positions globally went to: Holland, Denmark and Sweden with scores of 72.16;71.15 and 70.81 respectively.

For this index, Education First had the participation of 950 thousand adults who took an English test in 2015. An interesting fact is that in almost every country evaluated, women have better English skills than men.

In Latin America the top five countries were:

Argentina: First in Latin America and 19 globally. The only Latin American country to reach a “High” grade.

Dominican Republic: Second in Latin America and 23 globally. It climbed one position with respect to the previous year.

Uruguay: Third in Latin America and 36 globally. Classified under “Low” level in English Proficiency, but they climbed 8 slots in comparison to 2015.

Costa Rica: The first Central Americans in the ranking. Since 2011 the country remains ranked in a “Low” level of English Proficency, but it went from the 43rd slot in 2015 to 38 in 2016.

Brazil: Also qualified in a “Low” level with a score of 50.66, they ranked 40 globally and fifth in Latin America.
