Costa Rican migration police at the Juan Santamaría International Airport detained a Mexican man who is one of the suspects of the robberies that occurred last Tuesday, October 31st in two jewelry stores in Escazú.

Migration ad interim director, Esteban Obando, confirmed that the alert was given by the new digital system (Migración Visible) on Saturday night and the airport authorities immediately contacted the Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) in order for them to carry out the proper procedure.

The two stores robbed were Eurochronos in Multiplaza Escazú were nine men wearing masks threatened the personnel with guns (which later the police proved were BB guns), broke the glass display cabinets and took luxury watches and other valuables; the other store was Tiempo Global in Plaza Colonial, also in Escazú, in this case there were four thieves who followed the same M.O.

The OIJ informed Thursday that the suspects are members of a Mexican band formed by at least 15-20 men who entered the country between October 25 and the 29th and out of which nine are already identified; the authorities have the theory that the mastermind behind these robberies could be a Costa Rican.

Last Friday, a migration officer at the Juan Santamaría International Airport disregarded an alert given by the digital migration system and allowed one of the suspects to leave the country; this officer is currently under investigation and faces a criminal suit for the noncompliance of her duties and responsibilities.
