The National Emergency Committee, the National System of Conservation Areas and the Ministry of Environment are raising the alert for communities close to marine lands and estuaries to stay alert for the possible presence of crocodiles and alligators in unusual areas.

The heavy rains that have caused several rivers to overflow in different communities in Guanacaste and Puntarenas in areas where these animals are commonly found can cause the displacement of crocodiles and alligators.

 

 

 

On social media there have been several images of crocodiles walking around which as of now have been confirmed to be fake ( See Pictures) and not related to the emergency situation that Costa Rica is currently facing, however, the alert is given as a preventive measure.

The emergency authorities recommend:

• Stay away from flooded areas, overflown rivers and/or areas where the level of blocked up water is high enough that an animal of this kind could go unnoticed.
• Avoid the practice of water sports such as swimming and surfing in areas that have been affected by floods.
• Don’t leave your pets or animals in flooded areas.
• If you spot a crocodile, don’t get near it, don’t bother it and don’t try to feed it or touch it.
• Once the flooded areas return to normal it is important to do a general revision to ensure the animals aren’t trapped. Crocodiles and alligators will find their way back to their natural habitat.
• In the event of finding one of this animals in a place where they pose a risk report it to 911 or 1192.
