The Poás Volcano near Alajuela has been sending up columns of water vapor over the past several days after becoming more active on May 13, making for some great photography, and not causing any problems for neighboring areas, reported the Volcanology and Seismology Observatory at the Costa Rican National University (Ovsicori-UNA).

Meanwhile, further south along the Central Volcanic mountain chain, the Turrialba Volcano near Cartago has had a steady series of ash emanations, but no big eruptions, and columns have been around 500 ms, said Ovsicori-UNA scientists, who regularly update their Facebook page with photos and information on volcanos and earthquakes in the country and region. Winds near Turrialba have prevailed towards the north and northwest, with ash fall predicted and reported for some parts of Siquirres, Guapiles, Aquas Zarcas and Sarapiquí.

The Poás vapor eruptions of last night and this morning produced columns that exceeded 1 km in height, said scientists.
