As surprising as it may seem, Costa Rica doesn’t have the most expensive fuel in the region. According to information by GlobalPetrolPrices.com which monitors the prices of fuel in 100 countries, the most expensive fuel was sold in Honduras and Nicaragua.

The annual average price for premium gas (gasolina super as it is known in Central America) during 2017 was of US$0.98 per liter in Honduras while in Nicaragua and Costa Rica the average price reached US$0.96 and in Guatemala and El Salvador US$0.89 and US$0.85 respectively.

When it comes to regular gas it was Nicaragua that had the highest average price at US$0.93 per liter, followed closely by Costa Rica which sold this fuel with an average price of US$0.91.

Diesel was sold at US$0.79 per liter in average during 2017 by Nicaragua and Honduras.

In 2017 there was a general raise in the prices of fuel in all Central America specially during the month of September, part of this had to do with natural disasters that affected the United States, particularly Hurricane Harvey which affected Texas; the fuel reached a price of US$1.04 in Nicaragua and US$1.02 in Honduras.

In Costa Rica, it was during the months of September and October when the gas prices reached the highest point at US$1.11 for premium gas, US$0.96 for regular gas and US$0.83 per liter of diesel.

“We show gasoline prices for Costa Rica from 02-Oct-2017 to 08-Jan-2018. The average value for Costa Rica during that period was 1.09 U.S. Dollar with a minimum of 1.06 U.S. Dollar on 06-Nov-2017 and a maximum of 1.11 U.S. Dollar on 02-Oct-2017. For comparison, the average price of gasoline in the world for this period is 1.47 U.S. Dollar”, states the website GlobalPetrolPrices.com.

However prices yesterday in the Central American region show Costa Rica with the highest price in Central America:
