One of Carlos Alvarado’s first actions as President of Costa Rica was signing an order along with the Minister of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT), Rodolfo Mendez Mata, to find a solution to 28 “bottlenecks” that cause the main traffic jams in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).

The President also indicated that the order also includes repairing 60 kilometers of roads located in the more critical sectors of the GAM.

This first Government Council took place in the National Theater on Tuesday afternoon; the order will go into effect on May 15 and it must be fulfilled in a year’s time.

The objective of this executive order is to improve the transit for the public, eliminate some traffic jams and improve the time it takes to travel from one point to the other in public transportation.

Some of the critical sectors that will see changes over the next year include the road connecting Santo Domingo de Heredia and San Jose; Guadalupe, Hatillo and Tibas.

Transit operations, exclusive lanes for public transportation, eliminating street parking, expanding roads, bridges along with strengthening other forms of transportation are just part of the actions to be implemented.

“One of the main challenges this government has is to strengthen and make the public transportation system more efficent in the GAM”, explained the press release.
