The heavy rains that soaked much of Costa Rica Tuesday night, August 29, caused 58 people to be evacuated to shelters due to flooding in their homes.

In total, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) handled 50 different incidents in 22 cantons in eight regions of the country. Meteorologists have warned that tropical systems off of the country’s coasts will be bringing heavy rains in the upcoming days.

The most affected areas were Moravia, Coronado and Cartago.

According to Walter Fonseca, CNE operations manager, two shelters were opened due to the situation.

The first one is located in the recreation room at the Isla de Moravia, in a district north of San José, where 31 people are being sheltered after their housed were affected by a flooded river.

The second shelter was set up in the community hall in La Fabiola, Coronado where 27 people whose homes were affected by flooding are staying.

Fonseca added that a geologist will be sent to inspect the flooded areas in Moravia to evaluate damages and determine the needs in different areas.
