The work against organized crime by Costa Rican authorities has paid off as they have seized in the last 10 days a total of 6.4 tons of cocaine.

The most recent case occurred this Monday, March 4, when officers of the Ministry of Public Security intercepted a boat with three Colombian citizens aboard and loaded with a total 1.5 tons of cocaine which they tried to get rid off by dumping the packages overboard.

“We managed to confiscate in 10 days, 6,458 kilograms of cocaine, which shows the effective work and the commitment of the police bodies in battling drug trafficking”, commented Michael Soto, Minister of Public Security.

The National Coast Guard Service informed that it was during regular patrolling actions along with the US Coast Guard Service that one of the patrol planes detected the presence of a low profile speedboat in waters of the South Pacific, they immediately coordinated actions to intercept the boat; after a chase during which the crew aboard the speedboat threw 60 packages overboard, authorities finally were able to capture the suspects 170 kilometers from Golfito in Puntarenas.

Drug Control Police (PCD) checked the bag and weighed the drugs found confirming 1,500 kilograms of cocaine.

“This is a message to criminal organizations that we will not allow the use of our territory for drug trafficking. We will continue working, battling drug trafficking, and we hope to have more results in the upcoming days”, concluded Soto.
