Overall good weather will be enjoyed by families and tourists in Costa Rica over the holidays. According to a weather forecast reported by national television network Repretel, sunny skies and moderate breeze will be predominant during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Average daytime temperatures will fluctuate between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius (71 to 72 Fahrenheit). After the sunset, however, a significant drop in temperatures will result in chilly nights that may call for coats, sweaters and cozy blankets.

 

Trade winds from the Caribbean are expected to pick up speed at night, and they will be most strongly felt in the Greater San Jose Metropolitan Area (Spanish initials: GAM), the Central Valley, and the touristy Guanacaste region. Readers of The Costa Rica Star who live in the mountains can expect temperatures to be as low as 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 Fahrenheit). By Thursday, increased cloud coverage and stronger winds are expected along with higher humidity. These conditions will be mostly felt in the eastern portion of the Central Valley, and there is a slight chance of light rains that may fall on the higher regions; however, rains are not expected to disturb major traditional holiday celebrations in Costa Rica such as El Tope (equestrian parade).

 

Visitors arriving in the Caribbean region of Costa Rica, particularly Puerto Viejo and Cahuita, can expect some periods of torrential rains followed by sunny skies and warm temperatures after Christmas Day. In the Pacific and along the Gold Coast of Costa Rica, tourists will not be affected by rains; instead, they will experience very dry conditions and even water shortages in places such as Guanacaste. This marked difference in weather conditions in such as small country is part of the topographical and climatological diversity of Costa Rica.
