The National Seismology Network published the following information regarding the activity at the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano:

“The Volcanology and Seismology Observatory of the Arenal and Miravalles (OSIVAM), operated by the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) and that forms part of the National Seismology Network (RSN: UCR-ICE), registered changes in the behavior of the seismic activity in the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. Since April an increase in the low frequency seismic activity was registered, these processes are typical of the circulation of hydrothermal or magmatic flows through ducts within the volcano. On the other hand, on May 20, a small earthquake swarm was also registered including close to 45 events of volcanic-tectonic nature (seismicity generated by processes of rupture through a fault inside the volcano). So far in June, the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano maintains a pattern of seismic behavior under observation since May, during which low frequency and high amplitude seismic events have been registered. This pattern has been seen before prior to eruptive periods of the Rincon de la Vieja, due to this, precaution is recommended, particularly in the areas close to the riverbeds of the Azul, Penjamo and Blanco Rivers as well as the Azufrosa stream. The RSN maintains surveillance over the evolution of the activity in this volcano”.
