The Ministry of Science and Technology (MICIT in Spanish) continues its initiative to support the Smart Community Centers (CECIs) across Costa Rica by donating new equipment and recognizing the efforts of the members of the community who take advantage of them. Vice Minister Keilor Rojas traveled to the CECIs in Siquirres and Limon on Friday with new hardware and certificates of achievement.

The CECI in Limon is located in the Thomas B. Lynch library. Students from the University of Costa Rica and library personnel are tasked with teaching courses in English, basic computer skills and Internet literacy. This is a busy CECI, with more than 300 students making use of the center and its resources each month.

On Friday morning, Vice Minister Rojas presented students at the CECI in Limon with 20 certificates of achievement. The MICIT recognizes the efforts of the community as they try to improve their quality of life through education, and to this extent the Ministry believes that the CECIs accomplish a lot in this regard.

After his visit to Limon, the Vice Minister traveled to Siquirres with six new computers for the CECI in that community, also located within the town’s library. Neighbors in Siquirres have used their CECI to sharpen computer skills that are now largely expected by most employers in Costa Rica.
