This Wednesday, April 12th at approximately 6:30 p.m. the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI) registered an eruption at the Poás Volcano.
Due to the lack of visibility in the area the OVSICORI cannot confirm the altitude reached by the column, but the activity extended for close to 40 minutes.

Neighbors of the area of Bajos del Toro to the north east of the volcano and the National Park were affected by the falling of ash and the strong smell.
Preliminarily the eruption is considered as a phreatic (steam-driven) explosion, but the material ejected must be analyzed in order to accurately determine the nature of the same.

The National Emergency Committee (CNE) evacuated the neighbors that live close to the Desague River, which originates to the south of the active crater, the eruption caused material to break off and fall in the river, this caused a small flash flood and a small overflow, which is the reason the CNE decided to evacuate the neighbors.

The Poas Volcano has been increasing its activity in the past few days, the OVSICORI also reported the emergence of a new fumarols which may have contributed with the raise in the lake’s temperature, which went from 35⁰C to 40⁰C in just one week, the color of the lake also suffered visible changes going from green to a milky grey.
