Nicaraguan school children evacuated after 5.5 quake.
This morning at 10:48 local time, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Nicaragua in La Paz, a small town in the province of León, north of Managua.
Electricity was out in La Paz Centro, and schools in the surrounding region, including Managua were evacuated and closed after the quake, reported Nicaragua’s El Nuevo Diario.
The country was well-prepared for the event after 1.5 million people throughout the country participated in an earthquake simulation drill on Monday, reported El Nuevo Diario.
Costa Rica’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (Ovsicori-UNA) reported the event as having a depth of 10 km, and having an epicentre 11.2 km north of La Paz Centro (Latitude: 12.44N, Longitude: 86.66W).
Thos recent quake’s epicenter was very close to the country’s recently active Momotombo Volcano, reported Nicaragua’s La Prensa Libre.
Other nearby towns affected by the quake include Nagarote and Telica, both in Nicaragua.
Local media reported that at least 12 replicas were felt following the earthquake.
Damages to local homes were reported, said La Prensa Libre.
