New York, Feb 8 (EFE).- The New York Times launched Monday a Spanish-language Web site, a new platform for expanding its presence in the Spanish-speaking market with articles translated from English and others originally written in Spanish.

The project comes in addition to a weekly print edition that has been distributed for several years in the Hispanic world. The Times also normally translates editorials into Spanish editorials that focus on subjects of interest to U.S. Latino communities and Latin America.

At the presentation of this new initiative, Times deputy international editor Lydia Polgreen said the new Web site will include stories relevant to Latin America, provided by a team posted around the region and in Spain.

Monday’s leading article is a translation of the front page report of the English-language print edition about the risks facing Central American migrants making their hazardous journey to the United States.

The new online edition is being launched on the eve of Pope Francis‘s visit to Mexico, an event that will attract great attention both in that country and in Latino communities of the United States.

Besides the Web site in Spanish, The New York Times has an edition for China.

The daily is in the process of strengthening its online editions. Last year the company had an increase of 8.2 percent in advertising revenues from its digital platforms, while income from its print publications dropped 8 percent. EFE
