The number of road accidents in Costa Rica this 2018 has decreased in comparison to the same period of 2017.

In total between January and April 2017 a total of 179 people lost their lives, while for the same period of this year road accidents account for 148 deaths, in total 31 less.

“We see that the decrease is important. We have the rainy season coming up, mid-term vacations, and the Romeria (August 2), all events that usually increase the fatalities in the roads, we are preparing considering this and we must not forget the Russia World Cup in which Costa Rica participates and that definitely increases the alcohol consumption and the associated risks”, explained Felipe Venegas, Chief of Police Operations.

The number of accidents related to the use of alcohol has also gone down, 2017 reported 40% less fatalities than 2016, yet in the first four months of 2017 a total 12 people lost their lives as a consequence of this behavior, however, in the same period this year only 4 deaths have been reported for this reason.

Speeding continues to be the main cause of fatal accidents, out of the total number of fatal incidents in the road, 43 of them were caused for this reason, representing 29%; the second cause of fatal accidents has to do with lane invasions, responsible for 32 deaths, while pedestrian carelessness caused 20 people to lose their life.

Motorcycles continue to lead the statistics in number of fatal accidents with 59 deaths, while cars register 30 and bicycles 12.
