During his first trip as President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado held a meeting at the National Geographic Society’s headquarters in Washington D.C. with leaders in conservation and environmental sustainability.

President Alvarado and the Minister of Environment, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, touched on topics such as the challenge to become carbon neutral, conservation of forests, and ocean health.

“One of the pillars of this meeting was to be able to meet with the presidents and CEO’s of the largest conservation organizations in the world which are all located in the United States, we had the opportunity to share with 15 representatives that have worked throughout the past 30 years with Costa Rica and therefore it was of importance to reconfirm our commitment to conservation and sustainable development. Their presence in this meeting was a clear indicator of the country’s reputation but also of their interest to continue working with the country and the vision of this administration when it comes to conservation and sustainable development. (…) The commitment between the parties will translate into more work and the channeling of international funds towards forest conservation, ocean’s health agenda and carbon neutrality”, explained Minister Rodriguez.

Alvarado expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting and the candid welcome they had. He made emphasis in the importance of continuing efforts to demonstrate that sustainable development and the protection of the environment can generate wealth and growth for the communities and countries.
