Guatemala City, Oct 4 (EFE).- Rescue teams resumed searching on Sunday for victims of the mudslide in a community outside Guatemala City that killed at least 87 people and left 350 others missing, emergency management officials said.

The search resumed at 6:00 a.m., Sergio Cabañas, the national emergency management office’s coordinator on the scene, told EFE.

The national emergency management office suspended search and recovery efforts on Saturday evening to ensure the safety of workers.

The official death toll currently stands at 87, with many of the bodies unidentified and in bad condition, making it necessary to use DNA tests to identify them, the Attorney General’s Office said.

The rain-triggered mudslide swept through El Cambray II, a village outside the city of Santa Catarina Pinula, located about 22 kilometers (13 miles) from Guatemala City, on Thursday night.

Some 667 trained rescue workers are digging through the mud in El Cambray II, with the disaster scene divided into five sectors to make it easier to search for victims.

Thursday night’s mudslide was one of the worst natural disasters to strike Guatemala in 2015.

Conred officials told EFE that some 300,000 people live in El Cambray II and more than 230 other “at-risk” villages on Guatemala City’s outskirts, where internal migrants settle and build precarious homes on the slopes of hillsides or ravines, making them highly vulnerable to mudslides and other natural disasters.
