A new species of the plant Tachia was recently discovered at Isla del Coco, Costa Rica; the information was published in the Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas.

Guillermo Blanco park ranger of the National Park was the first to discover the plant and immediately informed a group of botanic experts from the Costa Rica National Herbarium which belongs to the National Museum. The new specimen received the name Tachia Blancoi in honor of the park ranger that came upon it.

The new species was found to the north of Cabo Dampier, and it’s a genre that has the characteristic of growing as a small bush an sometimes vines. The new species has distinctive characteristics which sets it apart from others already known in America.

“This is evidence that there is still a lot to study and discover at Isla del Coco”, commented Blanco.

More than 235 species of plants have been registered at Isla del Coco, 70 of which are endemic.
