Last night around 10:30 a 2.9 magnitud quake was felt and also heard throughout some southern and most western San José districts.

People in Ciudad Colón, Santa Ana, and Pavas, Guácima de Alajuela, Escazú, San Juan de Dios in Desamparados, Palmichal de Acosta, Belén, and as far as downtown Alajuela reported feeling the quake, stated the Volconology and Seismology Observatory of the National University (Ovsicori-UNA).

There were no reports of damage, and no reports from the northern Central Valley were received.

The epicenter was identified as 2.74 km southwest of Salitral, Santa Ana at a depth of 19 km.

About two hours later, a 2.5 magnitude quake was registered in the same area.

Ovsicori said on their Facebook page that so far in 2016, 24 different low magnitude quakes (under 2.9) have been registered in the area of Desamparados, San Antonio de Belén and Los Altos de San Rafael. These have been relatively shallow with depths of less than 21 km. Residents in these areas reported feeling about half of these, and none of have caused damage.

Then, for those just getting to sleep after those first quakes, just before 1:00 this morning, a 4.7 quake off the coast of Quepos rattled Quepos and the Central Valley. Located 57 km southwest of Quepos, Puntarenas, it was registered at a depth of 31 km and is associated with a subduction of the Coco plate under the Caribbean plate. No damages were reported.
