A 6.0 magnitude earthquake shook Costa Rica the afternoon of this Sunday, May 12 at 1:24 p.m., its epicenter was in the South Zone of the country in Corredores, Puntarenas near the Panama boarder; this first movement was followed by several replicas with magnitudes of between 3.0 and 3.9; another important earthquake was registered at 7:01 p.m. with a magnitude of 4.8 on Richter scale, this one with epicenter to the North of Parrita, Puntarenas.

The first seism was also felt with intensity in Panama. While it was reported as moderate to strong in most areas of the Central Valley.

“Earthquakes are very common in Costa Rica. This is the result of living in an plate subduction zone where three large tectonic plates interact: Coco, Caribbean and Nazca. This is a characteristic Costa Rica shares with other countries located along the Pacific Ring of Fire such as Japan, Mexico, Peru and Chile”, explained the National Seismology Network.

No important damages have been reported.
