Costa Rica is blessed with various kinds of hummingbirds; some are more colorful than others, but they are all adorable and fascinating. We even have one hummingbird species that prefers climbing to hovering when it comes to feeding on the sweet nectar of colorful tropical flowers, but there is nothing like watching hovering hummingbirds in Costa Rica.

Aeronautical engineers and scientists have been keenly interested in the physics and mechanics that take place when hummingbirds fly and hover as they feed. As reported by Discovery News earlier this year, engineers who design drones are particularly inclined to studying hummingbirds:

A recent study by researchers from Stanford University, Wageningen University, Eindhoven University of Technology, and the University of British Columbia, pitted a surveillance drone against the flight efficiency of a hummingbird. While we might be excused for thinking, “Not even close; hummingbirds for the win!” the results weren’t quite so lopsided.

The researchers found that while the best of the hummingbirds tested was more than 20 percent more efficient than the drone, the typical hummingbird was about as efficient as the man-made bird.
